When Nemesis arrived on Earth, due to its vastness, China suffered severe devastation, both from the meteor shower due to the disintegration of the planetoid, and from the tidal forces produced by its entry into lunar orbit.

While the most exposed part of the population left Earth, those who could took refuge in large bunkers built by the government.

But the central government could not stand it, and for about one hundred and fifty years the country remained in a state of chaos, but in the end the government of Xian managed to reorganize the country even under the pressure of foreign invasions.

Culture: The basic culture of the RIC is obviously pre-space Chinese, although due to the destruction brought by Nemesis, the Han ethnic element has been partly diluted. China proudly maintains its traditional culture, defending it from what it considers Houxing's innovations. Indeed, the country is experiencing the so-called "Third Confucian Wave", which at least formally re-proposes the most important and dear themes of Confucianism.

The republic is actually a collection of small states and city-states governed by a ruling council of advisors chosen through a system of examinations.

Even though the country is a republic, there are no general elections, but when a member of the governing council is appointed, he chooses one of the five legal parties in the republic and becomes its representative.

The ruling council, called The Assembly of Harmonious Governance, remains in office for six years, and is renewed by a third every two years, creating a continuous exchange between the parties and changing political positions, often significantly.

Culturally, the Republic lies somewhere between the Lunar League and Houxing. The republic's society is alive and producing numerous works of entertainment that are becoming popular throughout the system, but according to a Confucian social code that, in part, limits their spread.

RIC has no claims against Houxing, nor does it receive any. On the contrary, Xian is credited with having left Earth for safety.

The flag uses the colours and pattern of an ancient flag, with the sun symbol of the Republic, also a pre-space symbol, indicating that it is a legitimate Chinese successor state to the country's thousand-year history.
